Families of Color Seattle (FOCS) Parent Group at CTC

In partnership with Families of Color Seattle (FOCS), we are happy to announce the creation of a parent support group specifically for parents who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color. The focus of these groups is to provide a safe space for parents, caregivers and families to discuss race, identity, and disability, and how these intersect.

This program is for families with children over age 3.

  • The group is facilitated by a parent who received early support services from CTC and has experience in advocating through a variety of systems for their child.
  • CTC’s parent educator is trained in using carefully designed curriculum by FOCS to help build relationships and dive deeper into sensitive issues in order to build a community with each other.
  • There are opportunities for parents to discuss early development and to discuss and learn more about parenting skills.
  • Parents will have a chance to learn directly from a professional or a provider on a topic they collectively choose (for example: infant mental health, motor development, feeding skills for toddlers, etc).

For more information or to join the group, please contact Nahid Tewelde, CTC Family Resources Coordinator, at nahid@ctckids.org.

Jessica Perry  Milan Perry

“In 2019 I was diagnosed with stage 3 Breast Cancer and within months my daughter Milan was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I thought to myself, what do I do now? How can I help my daughter? And how will the world treat her? Do you have thoughts like mine?

My name is Jessica Perry and my daughter’s name is Milan. As a mother of a daughter with autism I have personal experience with the responsibilities of supporting a child with a disability and life’s daily tasks. I have also learned that parents’ mental health is critical to children’s success. Parents and families with knowledge and support will have the ability to champion their children that will in turn catapult their success in life. And we are here to help!

Children’s Therapy Center, Families of Color Seattle (FOCS) and I are here to facilitate the space necessary for families like ours. This group is free, what we share confidential, the virtual space will be safe, it will be an environment that is secure, and a space you can trust and rely on. Our weekly sessions will be an exclusive time with one another where we can laugh, cry, and cheer one another on and I look forward to seeing you there!”
